Miami is not only known for its Cuban community but we also have a large Bahamian community. Therefore for the Miami Destination a Caribbean Theme should be a consideration. The best theme known as “Junkanoo” which is a Bahamian version called “Carnivale, this is also known as a large street party or parade. This event features all types of costumed entertainers that dance and interact with the locals. The history behind the Carnivale is that during the times of slavery, black families, due to the fact that they had to work, were not able to celebrate the Christmas holidays so therefore around midnight, they would celebrate late after midnight. Their tradition is to truly revel in the holiday on the eve of Christmas and New Year’s Eve – after hours.
Since the Bahamas is a mere 35 minute plane ride, why not make your next event reflect this amazing culture?
So what makes a great “Junkanoo Event”? In the Bahamas, the streets are turned into a huge parade! Band after band perform and the participant dance until all the bands have performed, sometimes until the sun rises. To make your event come alive, bring in an authentic Junkanoo 10 to 12 or more piece band with lively costumed stiltwalkers and you have a party. Accented with give-aways such as masks, beads and noise makers – you can not go wrong. Then add face painters, henna artists, psychics and a photo booth and you have created one of the best events your group have experienced. We created this event at The Marriott Harbor Beach in Ft. Lauderdale and everyone had a great time! Complete with a DJ, Junkanoo parade, face painters and more!
